This week’s photo challenge comes to us from Peru. After spending a few days in Cusco and at Machu Picchu, Alex and I decided to adventure a bit further afield and came upon a little village with a big weaving culture.
Weaving is an ancient craft that is carried on by women in communities all over Peru. Everything is handmade, from the yarn (sourced from alpaca, llamas, and sheep), to the dyes (hand dyed from local plants and minerals), and the designs (often centuries old patterns and symbols which can draw from a number of inspirations, including history, daily life, communities and nature). In addition to preserving tradition, weaving provides important economic opportunities for these women today.
